St. Anthony the Great is recognized by ancient tradition as the ‘Father of monks’ and is the first monk whose writings have been handed down, although his influence on subsequent generations depends mainly on the Life of Anthony written by St. Athanasius of Alexandria, a work that spread widely throughout the ecumene and became the model for Christian hagiography.

We have come to the conclusion of our 31st Colloquium on Orthodox Spirituality, dedicated this year to the ‘Father of Monks’ of East and West, Saint Antony the Great.

The speakers, who deserve our gratitude, presented the ecclesial and human context in which Saint Antony lived his long life (250/251-356), then the main literary sources that allow us to learn about his ascetic conversion, his battles against the Evil One, and his spiritual doctrine; and finally, the legacy he leaves today to monks and nuns, namely their vocation to serve God, the Churches, and humanity. It is, in a way, a triptych, the central panel of which is the monastic example and doctrine of Saint Antony as recounted by literary sources.

To register for the conference, please contact the organising secretariat in advance to check availability and only then send the completed registration form via the link that will be provided by email.

Registration is open from 15 May to 25 August 2025, subject to availability. Participants who are guaranteed full board will be accommodated at the Monastery of Bose, but due to the limited number of places available, some may be asked to make their own arrangements for meals and accommodation. Priority will be given to those coming from abroad.
